I've been collecting vintage militaria for some 55 years now, I retired Army 35 years, amazing what can be found in surplus and pawn shops, I even have a complete O.R.s Wermacht Panzer uniform, low boots, decorations, panzer wrap, trousers, m43 cap, mouse gray shirt, neck tie and the cuff title GROSSDEUTCHLAND.

@UkHILL it was like this when i bought it. The soldiers would have detached the shaft from the head and then cut the shaft to the required length they wanted and then reattached the head. That's my understanding. Thanks for commenting

@steelhelmetstan7305 thanks Stan it goes in to one of the pouches on the BAR belt. Its a bit why put it in the pouch? you will have 2 less mags. They should have put the wire hanger on from factory so it would hang from the belt instead.
